What is Online Collaboration?

Online collaboration involves utilising tools and platforms to create an online space where users can connect with each other and work collaboratively.

Types of Online Collaboration

  • Synchronous / Communication-based – working with other team members at the same time by using instant messaging (e.g. Discord) and videoconferencing (e.g. Webex)

  • Asynchronous / File-based – primarily includes document sharing / Cloud storage (e.g. OneDrive) and document syncing (e.g. Microsoft’s co-authoring feature). Group calendars (e.g. Google Calendar) and workflow management systems can also be considered as asynchronous online collaboration.
