Lenin's Achievements

In the midst of the Civil War, Lenin's leadership and strategic decisions were crucial for the success of the Bolsheviks. He employed several tactics to strengthen his regime:

Effective Propaganda and Oratory

Lenin's speeches were powerful tools in rallying support for the Red Army and discrediting the White Army as well as foreign intervention. He portrayed the Bolsheviks as the defenders of Russia's independence against imperialism.

Economic Control

Lenin introduced War Communism, a policy that allowed the Bolsheviks to have control over the economy, which was essential in the war effort. He also suppressed political opposition by using the Cheka to eliminate dissenters.

Effective Leadership

Lenin's leadership skills helped the Bolshevik party to consolidate power and emerge victorious in the Civil War. He was able to rally support for the Red Army and effectively implement policies that contributed to their victory.

Trotsky's Achievements

Trotsky played a crucial role in the Bolshevik's success during the Civil War, using his organizational skills and charisma to lead the Red Army and promote Bolshevik propaganda.

Leadership of the Red Army

As the appointed Commissar for War in 1918, Trotsky was responsible for creating and leading the Red Army. He implemented several key strategies, including:

  • Enforcing strict discipline and a rigid hierarchy,

  • Utilizing experienced ex-Tsarist generals and soldiers,

  • Assigning political commissars to each military unit to promote Bolshevik ideology,

  • And introducing mass conscription to increase the number of soldiers.

Propaganda Effort

Trotsky also played a crucial role in the Bolshevik's propaganda efforts during the Civil War. He oversaw the creation of an armored train, complete with a printing press, weapons, communication outposts and a library. He used this train to travel to the frontlines and support the Red Army, while also gauging the mood of the people, spreading tailored propaganda and personally commanding the army in times of crisis.
