Feature Film Conventions (Fiction)

  • Characters: Characters are the people or animals who appear in a film and drive the story forward. They are often central to the narrative and can be protagonists, antagonists, or supporting characters.


  • Voiceover or narrator: Voiceover or narration is a technique where a voice is used to provide additional information or commentary on the film. It is often used to provide exposition or to give insight into the character's thoughts and feelings.


  • Sound (SFX): Sound effects are sounds that are created or recorded to enhance the film's audio experience. They can be used to create a sense of atmosphere or to add realism to the visuals.


  • Music: Music is a key element of film that can be used to create a particular mood or atmosphere. It can be used to heighten tension, evoke emotion, or provide a contrast to the visuals.


  • Editing: Editing is the process of selecting and arranging the shots to create the final film. It can be used to control the pacing, rhythm, and flow of the film, and to create visual continuity between shots.


  • Use of text, titles, subtitles: Text, titles, and subtitles can be used to provide information, context, or to create a visual effect. They are often used to introduce characters or provide location and time information.


  • Mise en scene: Mise en scene refers to the overall visual design and composition of the film. It includes the set design, lighting, costumes, and camera angles.


  • Montage: Montage is a technique where a series of shots are edited together to create a narrative or emotional sequence. It can be used to compress time, convey a character's emotions, or provide background information.


  • Juxtaposition: Juxtaposition is a technique where two contrasting elements are placed next to each other to create an effect. It can be used to create irony, contrast, or to emphasize a point.


  • Camera angles, type of shot: Camera angles and types of shots can be used to create different effects and convey meaning. They can be used to create a sense of intimacy, distance, or to highlight a particular detail.


  • Colour: Colour is an important element of film that can be used to create a particular mood or atmosphere. It can be used to create a sense of realism, to convey a character's emotions, or to symbolize an idea.


  • Facial expression: Facial expressions are an important element of acting and can be used to convey a character's emotions and thoughts. They can be used to create a sense of empathy or to add depth to a character.


  • Costumes: Costumes are an important element of film design that can be used to convey a character's personality, status, or to create a particular mood or atmosphere.


  • VAST (visual, audio, symbolic, technical): VAST refers to the combination of visual, audio, symbolic, and technical elements that create the overall film experience. It includes elements such as camera angles, music, sound effects, and editing, as well as symbolic and metaphorical elements that convey meaning.
